The Front Office Update
  • “Coffee, Comfort & Conversation” | Tuesday, October 10th, 6:00PM: Our first “Coffee, Conversation and Comfort ” meeting will be held in the Roosevelt School Cafeteria.  We welcome you to come and bring a friend. The topic will be:  Having Difficult Conversations with Your Children.  Prior to this meeting, we ask that you think about a conversation you have had in your family that went well and one that was not as successful as you would have wanted it to be.  Also, think about conversations you will be having in the future.  This way we can share and compare strategies to support each other and our students. Please call me if you have any questions

  • Citywide Band Night | Thursday, October 12 th , 6-7 p.m.: The Melrose High School Band would like to invite everyone to the Citywide Band Night at Fred Green Field. Kids are invited to bring their instruments or join a group they might enjoy and learn how to march if they so desire. At the end of the evening, the MHS Band will perform their 2017 Competition Show “FANTASMIC”. We can’t wait to meet you!

  • MHS Marching Band Competition | Saturday, October 14th, 5-8:30 p.m.: The Melrose High School Band will be hosting a Northeast Scholastic Band Association (NESBA) Band Competition on. Melrose is tentatively slated to perform at 7:20pm. Admission $10 Adults, $8 Student/Senior. All are welcome!

  • Picture day | October 17th: Picture day will be on October 17th. Forms will be sent home in October. Picture retake day will be held in November.

  • Social & Emotional Learning Breakfast & Workshop | October 20th, 8:30 AM: Please join us at the Roosevelt School to learn strategies for how parents can support social emotional learning in connection with the school. This is sponsored by the Melrose Public School’s Title I program.

  • A Family Night of Code | November 2nd, 5:30-7:30 : MVMMS Cafeteria & Grades K-5 Students & their families.

PTO Update

Here’s what to know this week:

  • Jedlie | Tuesday, October 10: Motivational speaker and anti-bullying expert Jed Doherty brings his interactive storytelling, comedy, and illusions to the Roosevelt TODAY during school hours. This PTO-sponsored event inspires kids to be respectful, kind, cooperative and inclusive. Find out more at www.jedlie.com/.

  • Roosevelt Spirit Gear Sale | October 10-20. Show your school pride by ordering your Ravens t-shirts and hoodies today! Order online or fill out the paper order form that will be sent home with your child. These items will be available for a limited time! Proceeds support PTO initiatives.

  • Annual PTO Contributions | Donate to the PTO online by Friday, October 13. The collection period for voluntary annual PTO contributions is now open. Your donations help support educational enrichment activities, teacher stipends, and much more. You may also use the online form to sign up for volunteer activities. Thank you for your contributions.

  • Fall Roosevelt Community Garden Cleanup | Saturday, October 14, 10-Noon. The Roosevelt PTO’s Green Team are calling for helping hands — large and small — to participate in the fall cleanup of our school garden. Bring your kids and wear your gloves! Tasks include cleaning out raised beds, fall pruning and storing container pots for the winter.   • Join Roosevelt Team for MAAV Walk and Candlelight Vigil |  Sunday, October 22, 3:30-5:30 p.m. The Walk honors victims of domestic violence, promotes public awareness, and raises funds for MAAV’s outreach and prevention programs. Roosevelt School families join the annual walk year after year to  support this important community resource. Schedule of events:  3:30 p.m.: Roosevelt team meets at the Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School cafeteria; 4:00: team attends vigil; 4:30: team walks the 2-mile loop, then enjoys refreshments in the cafeteria. There will be rooms with alternative activities for children. Donate to or join the team at our team web page. Or contact PTO team captain Elizabeth Thomas at [email protected].

  • Halloween Party | October 28, 6-8 p.m. Help make our Halloween Party a SCREAM! Volunteers needed to run games, serve food, setup and cleanup. Most shifts are only 1 hour. Sign up here and thank you!

  • Classroom Directories | Reminder: please complete and return consent forms. Room parents will be sending  home consent forms that you must complete to be included in a classroom directory. The directory will be used by the room parents and families of your child’s classroom to communicate with each other. Please return your consent form as soon as possible.

  • Frosty Fridays | Until the weather turns cold or rainy, the PTO’s 5th Grade Recognition Committee will be selling popsicles near the Brunswick exit for $1 every Friday after school to raise money for the class of 2018 5th grade recognition event.

  • Diversity Book List | The Roosevelt PTO Enrichment Committee, in collaboration with the Melrose Public Schools, and the Melrose Public Library, created the Diversity Book List for children grades K-5, their families, and teachers. Children love reading books that reflect families and people similar to theirs as well as learning about people and families who are different. Special thanks to Andrea Razi-Thomas for spearheading this effort.

  • Non-fiction Resource: NewsELA | New this year: the Roosevelt PTO has funded a 1-year license to NewsELA Pro, based on teacher feedback on past pilot projects. NewsELA Pro is a website designed to get students engaged with the world around them by reading and analyzing non-fiction articles, speeches biographies and other high-interest, age-appropriate content from 30 daily news sources and publishers. Grade 5 teacher Mrs. Jones will be leading teacher  training and implementation at the Roosevelt.
