The Front Office Update

  • Important November Dates | 2017-2018 Calendar

  • Melrose Little League Registration  | Open through Tuesday, November 14: Melrose Little League is an instructional baseball league for all children ages 4 through 12.

  • 15th  Annual Melrose International Welcome Potluck | Thursday, November 16, 6:30-8:30 PM: A community potluck dinner where we come together to: Celebrate our increasingly diverse community. Meet newcomers to Melrose. Discover each other’s cultures. Share ideas and resources. Speak with the Mayor, elected officials, and community leaders. Learn about the Human Rights Commission and how it can support you.  This will be held at Lincoln Elementary School, 80 W. Wyoming Ave, Melrose.

  • Melrose Parent University 2017 | Saturday,  November 18, 8:30 AM-12:30 PM: The Melrose Education Foundation’s Parent University is a half day of workshops for parents, caregivers, educators, and community members focused on education and related topics .

  • Harlem Rockets Comedy Basketball vs. the Melrose Underrated All-Stars | Saturday, November 18: The world-famous Harlem Rockets bring their dazzle, hoops, and alley-oops! Roosevelt, come cheer on Rebecca “Re-bounder” Dileo, Christine, “Half Court” Hyatt, and Liz “the Legend Chemist” DeSelm! The game begins at  7:00 pm and will be held at Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School Gymnasium. $10 (STUDENTS/SENIORS/STAFF) · $15 (ADULTS) · $20 VIP.  To order, contact the PTO at: [email protected], online at event/index/159766  or in person at Parent University from 8:30 am-12 pm or at door. Lots of great raffle prizes too!

  • Youth Band Sign Up | Monday, November 27:  Youth Band Sign Up Form. Rehearsals will take place every Monday [that there is school] from November 27th through May 21st unless otherwise announced. Students should be dropped off and picked up right before and after rehearsal. Please fill out this form if you need to or can help with carpooling.

  • Picture Retake Day |Thursday,  November 30: O’Connor Studios will be returning on Thursday, November 30th for students who were absent on picture day, or for those who need their portrait retaken. If you’d like to order pictures, please use your original order form, or pick up a new form in the office. If you are having your picture retaken, return your original package to the photographer on retake day. No order form is necessary. Please note that retakes are only offered for students who paid for a portrait package, or who were absent the first day.

  • 5th Grade Visit to Middle School | Thursday, December 7: Save The Date: Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School invites families of 5th Graders to visit the Middle School, hear about the opportunities at the middle school and tour the building. This Family Information Night is scheduled for Thursday, December 7, 2017 at 6:30 PM. Please email questions to MVMMS Principal, Brent Conway [email protected].

  • Directions | Grades 2-5: All students in grades 2-5 should have access to using their school Google accounts. This website does not require any downloads and can be run on any device.  Here are some directions for students to be able to access this resource at home. With a couple of “at home days” this week, it might be a good opportunity for students to practice keyboarding.  

PTO Update

Here’s what to know this week:week:

  • Questions for Superintendent Taymore DUE TODAY (Monday). The next PTO Meeting is Wednesday, November 15 from 7 to 8 p.m. Our guest speaker is Superintendent Taymore who will answer your questions on a broad range of topics. Email your questions today to [email protected]. See meeting agenda here.

  • Holiday Greenery Fundraiser starts this week! Unfortunately, Wilson Farm is not participating in the greenery sale this year but we are thrilled to partner with Calareso’s in Reading and a few other vendors. The “Fifth Grade Holiday Greenery and More Fundraiser” will kick off this week. Watch for more information in backpacks.

  • Wild West Book Fair | Monday, November 13 to Friday, November 17:  Remember to send in your money this week (and figure tax into your total)! Our rowdy family night is Tuesday, Nov 14 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The ranch will also open for early morning shopping on Thursday, Nov. 16 from 7:30-9:30 a.m. Every class gets time to visit during the week. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED DURING SCHOOL HOURS ON WEDNESDAY. To volunteer, visit the Scholastic volunteering page (requires a Scholastic password) or contact: [email protected]

  • School Musical: Mary Poppins Jr | Parent Orientation Meetings, Wed. Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. and Fri. Nov. 17 at 2:30 p.m.

    • Roles open to students in grades 3-5.

    • Tech crew positions for children in grades 4-5.

    • First rehearsal and tryouts: Friday, December 1.

IMPORTANT: You must attend one of the parent meetings in November for your child to participate in the school play. Visit the Roosevelt School Musical Facebook page for more info.

  • Sunshine Day: Pajama Day | Friday, November 17: For a $1 donation, students and staff can wear their favorite pajamas (no slippers please) to school! Volunteers will be in all classrooms to collect donations on November 17th. All proceeds will go toward the Sunshine Fund, which collects money for Melrose Public Schools’ families and staff who may be in need. Any questions, please contact Matt Greenberg at [email protected].

  • November Educational Enrichment Activities (takes place during school):

  • Winter Wonderland | Tuesday, December 5. The Roosevelt cafeteria will be transformed into a holiday shopping experience for the kids. Please consider volunteering for this beloved event! More information will be coming home in backpacks!

  • Community Giving Tree | Through Friday, December 8. The ECC PTO and Roosevelt School PTO are teaming up and partnering with Community Giving Tree to help provide children in need with clothing and other basics. We will be collecting their most requested items (NEW pajamas, socks and underwear) through December 8th. More info to follow soon!

  • Join Global Education in Melrose (GEM) World Cultures Fair at the Roosevelt | Seeking co-coordinator: Brooke Sulahian has generously spearheaded this PTO event for 4 years and is seeking a co-coordinator interested in volunteering with her this spring and leading this effort during the 2018-19 school year. If interested, please contact Brooke at [email protected].

  • Join the PTO Board! | Board members manage the PTO budget, liaise with school administrators, facilitate communication, and support committees’ event organizing, among other responsibilities. If you think you might be interested in joining the board next year, please let us know at [email protected].

  • Congratulations Deb Martino! | Parking Space Auction Winner for November. Deb and her family had the winning bid at the 2017 auction. That means Deb’s in the driver’s seat this month and earned the privilege of parking in the Auction Winner’s parking space. Happy parking, Deb!
